This is a collection of word problem solvers that solve your problems and help you understand the solutions. All problems are customizable (meaning that you can change all parameters). We try to have a comprehensive collection of school algebra problems. The good news is that the steps to solve word problems are always the same. The bad news is that you may have to think pretty hard.
Here's a run down on what you need to do for a typical age word problem, with a little example.
- Read the problem carefully.
- Get rid of clutter
- Identify key variables (unknowns).
- Eliminate unneeded variables.
- Use the text of the problem to write equations.
- Solve the equation.
- Find the remaining variables.
- The older brother Bob is two year older than his little sister Alice. Taken together, the sum of their ages is 8.
- Bob is two years older than Alice. Bob's age plus Alice's age = 8.
- Bob's age B and Alice's age A
- Get rid of B . Bob is 2 years older than Alice, so you can use A+2 instead of B
- Sum of their ages is 8. A + (A+2) = 8.
- Solve the equation using my Universal math simplifier and solver (click here!).
- With the link above, you just found Alice's Age A=3. Bob's age is two years older, which is 5.
